South Coast Shorebird Recovery Program – volunteers

The South Coast Shorebird Recovery Program was established in 1999 by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to reduce the rate of decline of threatened shorebirds and recover populations by enhancing breeding success and has always relied on a network of volunteers, coordinated by NPWS Rangers.

The program is currently a part of Saving our Species Program, a statewide program that aims to secure threatened plants and animals in the wild in NSW, and is currently operating from Wollongong to the NSW/Victorian border.

A feature of the Recovery Program is the strong partnerships, including annually over 100 dedicated volunteers, developed over time between the NPWS, other state and government agencies, local environment groups and individual members of the community.

This site is an information and online communication tool for our many volunteers and the interested broader community. It is maintained and run by volunteers.

The NPWS Staff

The program is managed by NPWS with Shorebird Recovery Rangers employed to coordinate the implementation of recovery actions during the breeding season and to report on results and to manage the Volunteer component of the program.

A Ranger works out of Nowra NPWS office to cover the region from Wollongong to Batemans Bay and a Ranger works out of Narooma and Merimbula NPWS offices to cover the region from Batemans Bay to the NSW/Victorian border.

Where the program works

The program works anywhere there is a need, not just in National Parks. There are important nesting sites on Local Council land, on Crown lands, as well as some sites requiring access through private lands.
The ever-present fox threat is managed through active baiting on appropriate properties with the cooperation of the land managers and cooperating private landholders.

Get in touch with the Rangers through the details on the Contact page.
